In the contemporary landscape painting circle, Wu Dakai has founded a distinctive Zen-style snowscape painting school, infusing time-honored ink wash landscape art with serene contemporary Zen philosophy. Centering on ancient temples, snowy scenes and monk figures, his artworks seamlessly integrate the brushwork charm of traditional snowscape paintings with the ethereal artistic conception of Zen Buddhism. Through the interplay of black-white virtual-real rhythms and vermilion temple walls, he depicts a spiritual pure land secluded from mortal turmoil.

Blank Space as Snow, Ink Shaping Vigorous Vigor: Contemporary Innovation of Traditional Snowscape Art

吳大愷的雪景創作，跳出了傳統 “礬雪” 技法的局限，以大面積的留白為雪，用濃淡層次分明的墨色勾勒松枝、枯木、古剎輪廓，形成 “天地一籠統” 的素凈底色。他筆下的雪，并非單純的自然景象，而是 “空” 的隱喻：雪覆蓋了塵世的喧囂，只留下松的蒼勁、樹的疏朗、墻的朱紅，于極簡的畫面中構建出極致的空間張力。

Breaking free from the limitations of traditional alum snow painting techniques, Wu Dakai creates snow scenery largely via blank space layout, and defines the forms of pine branches, withered trees and ancient temple outlines with layered ink shades, forming an immaculately plain snowy world. The snow in his paintings is far more than a mere natural scenery, but a metaphor for spiritual emptiness. It shrouds worldly hustle and bustle, leaving behind sturdy pines, sparse woods and vermilion walls. Extreme minimalist composition generates powerful spatial tension.

在《南京棲霞寺舍利塔》與《清涼世界》等作品中，他以淡墨暈染出云霧繚繞的遠山，以濃墨勾勒蒼松虬枝，以留白鋪展雪地，再用焦墨點染松針，黑白對比間，將冬日山林的靜謐與肅穆烘托得淋漓盡致。而積雪覆蓋的屋頂、石級，以淡墨暈染出厚度與層次，既保留了傳統山水畫的筆墨意趣，又賦予雪景通透的呼吸感，讓觀者仿佛能感受到雪落無聲的寧靜。

In masterpieces such as Sarira Pagoda of Qixia Temple in Nanjing and Pure Cool Realm, he renders mist-shrouded distant mountains with pale ink, outlines rugged ancient pines with dark ink, and lays out snowfields through blank space, dotted with pine needles in saturated ink. The stark black-and-white contrast fully presents the serenity and solemnity of winter mountains. Snow-laden rooftops and stone steps are dyed with pale ink to embody solid texture and layered sense. While inheriting the classic brushwork essence of traditional Chinese landscape paintings, his works endow snow scenes with vivid ethereal vitality, allowing viewers to sense the tranquil silence of falling snow.

大片的留白雪景中，一抹朱紅的古寺宮墻，成為貫穿系列作品的視覺核心。這抹紅，是《問佛》中孤僧前行的方向，是《棲霞古寺》山門的莊嚴，也是《童年往事》中老北京四合院的溫暖底色。它并非簡單的色彩點綴，而是 “紅塵” 與 “禪心” 的對話 —— 朱紅的人間煙火與純白的雪境禪意碰撞，既賦予畫面強烈的視覺沖擊力，又暗合了 “于紅塵中尋清凈” 的禪理。

Amid vast snow-covered blank spaces, vermilion ancient temple walls stand out as the core visual element throughout his series works. This touch of red symbolizes the pilgrimage direction of solitary monks in Seeking Buddha, the solemn grandeur of mountain gates in Ancient Qixia Temple, and the warm worldly charm of old Beijing courtyard houses in Childhood Memories. It is not merely decorative coloring, but embodies the spiritual dialogue between mortal mortal life and tranquil Zen mind. The fusion of earthly warmth and snowy Zen serenity delivers striking visual impact, and embodies the Zen tenet of seeking inner peace amidst mundane life.

畫中的僧人形象，更是禪意的具象化表達。無論是雪地中獨行的老僧，還是結伴走向古寺的僧侶，他們身著暖黃僧袍，身影渺小卻堅定，于茫茫雪地上踏出一串足跡，成為連接觀者與禪境的紐帶。《五臺山勝境》中，一列僧人沿紅墻而行，紅墻的厚重、白塔的素白、僧袍的暖黃與雪地的純白交織，營造出 “步步向禪” 的肅穆氛圍；而《白雪禪心》中，兩位僧人并肩而立，望向朱紅寺門，留白的雪地延伸向遠方，讓 “禪心” 的靜謐與遼遠躍然紙上。

Monk figures serve as the tangible embodiment of Zen philosophy. Whether lone monks wandering across snowfields or pilgrim monks walking towards ancient temples, these figures clad in warm yellow kasayas appear diminutive yet resolute, leaving footprints stretching across boundless snow and bridging viewers and the ethereal Zen realm. In Scenic Wutai Mountain, a line of monks stroll alongside vermilion walls. The massiveness of red walls, purity of white pagodas, soft yellow kasayas and vast white snow interweave to forge a solemn aura of advancing towards enlightenment step by step. In Snowy Scenery and Zen Heart, two monks stand side by side gazing towards vermilion temple gates, with endless snowy wilderness extending afar, perfectly manifesting the tranquility and vastness of inner Zen wisdom.

吳大愷的雪景，不止于描繪自然之美，更承載著濃厚的人文情懷與生命哲思。《童年往事》中，雪后的四合院、嬉戲的孩童、院墻上的紅福字，讓雪景跳出了清冷的禪意，多了幾分人間煙火的溫暖，喚起觀者對故鄉與童年的共鳴；而系列禪林雪景，則以古寺、佛塔、僧侶為載體，傳遞出 “落葉滿空山，何處尋行跡” 的禪境，引導觀者在留白與靜謐中，觀照內心的澄明。

Wu Dakai’s snowscape creations transcend mere depiction of natural beauty, carrying profound humanistic sentiments and philosophical insights. Childhood Memories features snow-blanketed courtyard houses, playful children and red fortune calligraphy on walls, infusing cold Zen scenes with warm earthly sentiments and evoking viewers’ nostalgia for hometown and childhood. His Zen-themed snowscape paintings adopt ancient temples, Buddhist pagodas and monk figures as carriers to interpret the profound Zen realm of "Fallen leaves fill the empty mountains, nowhere to trace mortal tracks", guiding viewers to purify inner minds amid serene blank spaces.

他的筆墨，始終在 “空” 與 “有” 之間尋找平衡：空，是雪的純白、云的縹緲；有，是松的蒼勁、寺的莊嚴、人的行走。這種平衡，恰是禪宗 “空性” 思想的體現 —— 萬物皆空，卻又因心的觀照而有了意義。吳大愷以雪景為媒，將傳統山水畫的 “天人合一” 理念，轉化為當代人可共情的精神體驗：在快節奏的塵世中，我們都需要這樣一片雪景，來安放躁動的心靈，找回內心的平靜與篤定。

His brushwork always strikes a perfect balance between emptiness and existence. Emptiness lies in pure white snow and misty floating clouds, while existence resides in vigorous pines, sacred temples and walking pilgrims. Such balance fully interprets the core Buddhist philosophy of emptiness — all worldly phenomena are inherently void, yet gain spiritual significance through inner perception. Taking snow scenes as the medium, Wu Dakai transforms the traditional Chinese philosophical pursuit of harmony between humanity and nature into resonant spiritual experience for modern people. Amid fast-paced mundane life, people all long for such pure snowy scenery to soothe restless souls and regain inner peace and steadfastness.

Wu Dakai’s Zen-style snowscape landscape paintings represent the integration of exquisite brushwork and profound Zen thoughts, as well as the dialogue between traditional aesthetics and contemporary spiritual pursuits. He takes snow as painting paper, ink as writing brush and Zen as spiritual soul. Through the collision between blank space and vermilion hues, cold serenity and earthly warmth, ethereal emptiness and earthly vitality, he constructs an exclusive spiritual Zen forest for modern people. These artworks not only purify viewers’ vision, but also cleanse their souls. Gazing at the boundless snowy wilderness and solemn vermilion temple walls, viewers seem to follow the footsteps of pilgrim monks into a pure spiritual haven, listening to the soft sound of falling snow and resonating with their innermost hearts.

吳大愷

1981 年生于四川遂寧，這片鐘靈毓秀之地賦予了他對藝術的敏銳感知。畢業于四川民族學院美術系后，他踏上了藝術探索的漫漫長路，專注于山水畫研究與創作，同時投身傳統武術太極拳研習，動靜之間，涵養藝術靈性。

中國雪景畫院院長，中國雪景山水研究院院長，中法藝術交流協會副會長，中國亞布力冰雪藝術協會秘書長，中國亞布力國畫院院長，中國美術學會會員，中國青年美術家協會常務理事，中國扇子藝術學會會員，《書畫家》雜志藝術顧問。

Born in Suining, Sichuan in 1981, he was endowed with an acute artistic sensibility by this land blessed with exquisite natural beauty and profound cultural essence. After graduating from the Fine Arts Department of Sichuan Minzu College, he embarked on his lifelong journey of artistic exploration, devoting himself to the research and creation of landscape paintings. Meanwhile, he delves into Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art, cultivating artistic inspiration through the harmony of motion and tranquility.
