Fans in Cape Verde celebrated late into the night after the country's historic World Cup debut saw it pull off a stunning result against European champion Spain.

The nation of half a million people made its first World Cup appearance on Monday, holding Spain to a 0-0 draw thanks to heroics from the team's 40-year-old goalkeeper and a resolute defense.

Not even the second-half introduction of young superstar Lamine Yamal could find a way past Vozinha and the Cape Verde defense.

Cape Verde, playing in its first-ever World Cup match, earned a point against Spain, the 2010 champion and one of the favorites to win this year's tournament.
