Hereby, three articles are excerpted from the biography, of which this is the first, as an expression of commemoration of Ms. Qian Canyun (Judy). Recalling the days when she served as my most capable assistant, I am filled with profound gratitude and fond remembrance.
Two Decades in Reflection: Chinese Wisdom and Sincere Service in My Years with the United Nations
More than twenty years have passed. Time has washed away much of the world’s noise, yet it has never erased those years at the United Nations—years etched with purpose, honor, and deep human warmth. In 1998, an appointment letter from UNESCO crossed oceans to reach me. When I learned I had been invited to serve as an advisor, I felt both honored and humbled. This appointment was not only recognition of my personal research, but also an acknowledgment of Chinese Wisdom Sino-human Engineering theoretical system rooted in Eastern thought. Carrying this profound responsibility, I took my oath and formally entered the work of advancing peace in the Middle East, using Eastern wisdom as a bridge to connect the shared aspirations for peace across different peoples, religions, and nations.

Working at UNESCO was a journey across languages, cultures, and belief systems. Along that journey, my full-time translator, Ms. Qian Canyun—Judy—was my most steadfast companion. Judy is fluent in English, French, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and her mastery of translation is exceptional. Yet what made her truly remarkable was not only her professional skill, but also her background and upbringing. She comes from a distinguished Hong Kong family, raised with both discipline and grace, carrying herself with composure and elegance. Her husband, Laurent, a senior executive at a French bank, further shaped her with the French tradition of meticulous etiquette, making her impeccable in diplomatic settings and my most trusted partner in this work.
As someone deeply engaged in the study and dissemination of Chinese culture, every conversation and exchange I had in international diplomatic settings depended on Judy’s support. Whether at formal banquets, official meetings, or multilateral negotiations, she was always present, delivering precise and fluid translation, conveying my ideas without the slightest distortion. Often, after an entire banquet spent moving between conversations and interpreting nonstop, she would not even have time for a proper meal—yet she never complained, always putting the work first. Her contributions extended far beyond translation. She managed daily life, organized work materials, coordinated logistics, and even handled financial matters with meticulous care. During those years, she worked tirelessly—by day moving between venues, and by night documenting and organizing every detail without rest. Her dedication removed countless obstacles and brought immense warmth to my work abroad.

In advancing peace efforts in the Middle East, I relied on Chinese Wisdom Ergonomics and Eastern philosophies of harmony to break barriers and resolve conflicts. Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors—once unable to share a room—were able, through my coordination, to sit together and begin dialogue. I also helped resolve complex international challenges, from religious conflicts to public health issues, always grounded in principles of balance and coexistence.
One of the most significant milestones was the design of a triangular structure along the upper Jordan River symbolizing unity and peace. Inspired by Chinese philosophy, the project evolved through multiple collaborations before being completed with a design aligned to Eastern aesthetics. It now stands as a symbol of peaceful coexistence. For these efforts, I was honored with the World Peace Palm Medal.
My experience at UNESCO taught me that in diplomacy, nothing is trivial. Every culture and belief system deserves deep respect. During this time, I also participated in international religious initiatives, using Chinese culture as a bridge. At the turn of the millennium, I designed a Millennium Wishing Bead for the Vatican, blending Chinese tradition into a symbol embraced globally, becoming a hallmark of East-West cultural exchange.

In 2000, I was invited to join the University of Southern California, beginning a new academic chapter. Judy once again accompanied me, assisting with all transitions for six months before returning to France.
More than two decades later, these memories remain vivid. Every achievement—from peacebuilding to cultural exchange—was made possible by Judy’s unwavering support and dedication.
