作動詞時，conduct 表示「實施，執行」，尤其是為了獲取信息或證實某事，比如，conduct a survey「展開調查」。此外，它也是一個名詞，表示「行為，舉止」，類似 behavior。區別在于，前者多用來指工作崗位上的行為，或者公開場合下的行為。所以 civilised conduct 是指「文明行為」。

前面的 mis- 常用來表示 bad or badly「壞的；壞地」。如 misfortune 相當于 bad luck「不幸」， misbehave 是「行為不端」。misconduct 也是指「行為不端」，但詞性不同，它只能作名詞。前面加上 academic 就成了學術圈令人不齒的 academic misconduct「學術不端」。

a faculty member

這個詞兼有兩種詞性。作形容詞時，preliminary 只有一個意思，那就是 happening before a more important action or event「預備性的；初步的」，與 initial 含義相近。所以「初步調查」我們可以像原文一樣用 a preliminary investigation，也可以用 a preliminary inquiry / inspection。

此外，preliminary 還有名詞詞性，既可以指「準備工作；初步行動」，也可以指「預賽」。好，我們來看去年《經濟學人》有關比亞迪的相關數據。

specifics

眾所周知，specific 是形容詞，表示「具體的」。但它還有名詞詞性，表示 particular details「細節，詳情」。但有一點需要特別注意，擁有名詞詞性的 specific 需要變身為 specifics 才行。也就是說，名詞 specifics 是一個復數名詞。所以「這件訴訟案的細節」是 the specifics of the lawsuit。

undisclosed

詞根詞綴 + 六級 + 考研詞匯

我們之前在那篇學過 disclose 這個動詞，表示 to give sb information about sth，尤其是一些秘密的事情，中文釋義為「揭露，披露，透露」，相當于 reveal，很常用。

而當前面加上 un- 這個否定前綴，并且變身現在分詞后，undisclosed 成為一個形容詞，表示 used to describe information which is not given to the public「未公開披露的，保密的」。下方《經濟學人》例句中，freight 是「貨運」， private-equity 意思是「私募股權」。

與之相反的則是 reactive「事后反應的，被動反應的」。
