走到昆明北郊黑龍潭，多數游客只顧著賞古梅、看潭水、逛龍泉觀，很少有人會特意繞到潭邊那座不起眼的圓冢跟前駐足。這片草木環繞的土墳，埋著一戶四百年前不肯向亂世低頭的人家，一戶選擇一同沉入潭底、以性命守住內心底線的普通人。很多本地長輩從小聽家里老人講過這段往事，外地游客卻大多一無所知，這段藏在昆明公園里的悲壯過往，讀懂之后很難不心生感慨。

故事的主人公薛爾望，本名薛大觀，祖輩從江南無錫遷來云南，扎根昆明幾代人。他算不上朝堂上的大人物，僅僅是當地一名秀才，平日住在城郊，讀書耕讀，不攀附權貴，待人重信義，街坊鄰里都知道他骨子里認死理，把是非和氣節看得比身家性命重得多。明朝末年天下大亂，中原大地早已戰火紛飛，偏居西南的云南一度還算安穩，薛爾望原本只想守著家人，安穩度日，誰也沒料到，亂世的禍事終究還是追到了昆明。

崇禎皇帝自縊、明朝中樞崩塌之后，南明政權在南方苦苦支撐，永歷帝朱由榔一路退守，最后落腳昆明，把這里當成臨時都城。彼時民間還有不少百姓心存念想，覺得只要君王尚在，大明就還有喘息翻盤的機會，薛爾望也是其中之一。他守著黑龍潭旁的居所，每日留心時局變化，盼著能有機會穩住西南疆土，可局勢惡化的速度遠超所有人想象。

順治十五年，吳三桂率領清軍大舉攻入云南，一路勢如破竹，直逼昆明城門。兵臨城下的消息傳開，城內人心惶惶，身居皇宮的永歷帝沒有選擇組織軍民守城抵抗，而是收拾行裝，帶著親信連夜逃往緬甸，打算躲到異國他鄉茍活。這件事徹底擊碎了薛爾望心中最后一點期待，聽聞君王棄城出逃的消息，他獨自站在潭邊沉默許久，口中發出一聲長嘆。在他信奉的處世道理里，一國之君本該與城池、百姓共存亡，如今拋下故土遠走他鄉，讓城中百姓獨自面對改朝換代的變局，實在難以接受。

清軍入城之后，一系列新規隨之推行，百姓必須改換服飾、剃去頭發，從前明人的穿戴、禮俗全都要推翻。不少當地士紳做出了不同選擇，有人權衡利弊之后主動歸順清廷，繼續保有家業；有人收拾行囊躲進深山，只求安穩活下去；也有手握實權的官員早早投降，轉頭為清軍辦事。薛爾望看著身邊人的種種選擇，心里始終無法說服自己低頭，在他的認知里，世代生長在大明國土，讀著大明典籍長大，若是改換身份侍奉新朝，便是丟掉了立身的根本。

他沒有沖動獨自赴死，而是回到家中，把妻兒、兒媳、女兒、孫輩還有常年伺候自家的侍女全部召集到一處，平靜地講清當下的時局，說出自己心中的決定。他告訴家人，自己不愿做歸順新朝的百姓，打算以死明心中志向，若是有人想要保全性命，大可自行離開，不必跟著自己一同赴難。原本以為家中會有人心生畏懼、想要退縮，可在場所有人聽完之后，沒有一人提出要獨自求生。

薛爾望的母親楊氏率先開口，說兒子兒媳愿意為心中道義赴死，自己身為長輩，自然也不能落后。兒媳孟氏緊緊牽著年幼的孩子，表示一家人無論生死都要相守，不愿分開茍活。兩個女兒也表態，不愿獨自留在世間，看著周遭一切改換模樣。貼身侍女蘭馨抱著年幼的孫兒詢問，主人一家若都離去，自己孤身一人留在世上沒有依靠，也愿意一同隨行。就連家中飼養的貓狗，后來也跟著眾人一同躍入潭水，成了這段往事里格外讓人唏噓的細節。

一家人沒有痛哭哀嚎，反倒收拾整齊身上的明代衣衫，一同前往平日常去散心的龍泉觀亭臺。薛爾望備好簡單酒菜，一家人圍坐在一起飲酒閑談，他提筆在亭壁寫下文字，字句直白坦蕩，只想做堅守氣節的亡魂，不愿做茍且偷生之人。席間他寫下抒發心境的詩文，只是年代久遠，那些筆墨沒能留存到今天，只留下后人轉述的只言片語，能窺見他當時滿心的悲憤與決絕。

酒宴結束，眾人相互道別，依次走向幽深的黑龍潭潭邊。潭水深不見底，常年積著冷水，平日里當地人都不敢輕易靠近深處。薛爾望率先帶著妻子縱身入水，隨后家中子女、兒媳、孫輩、侍女緊隨其后，一戶人家十余口人，前后相繼沉入潭中，沒有一人遲疑后退。

幾日之后，龍泉觀里的道士路過潭邊，發現水面漂浮起多具遺體，打撈上來時，所有人面容依舊安詳，沒有扭曲掙扎的模樣，道士心中大為震動，知道這是薛爾望一家。周邊鄉民聽聞消息紛紛趕來，看著一潭寒水，再看這滿門忠烈，心里滿是惋惜與敬重，大家一同出力，把薛家所有人的尸骨收攏，就近合葬在黑龍潭旁的空地上，沒有分開設冢，讓一家人死后依舊相守在一起，這座合葬墓，就此留存至今。

很多人會疑惑，薛家是誓死對抗清廷的前朝遺民，為什么后來清朝官府不僅沒有毀掉這座墳墓，反倒多次出資修繕、立碑題字，甚至準許地方官府每年定期祭祀。這里藏著很樸素的道理，古代歷朝統治者都推崇忠義二字，哪怕這份忠義獻給前朝，官方也愿意公開褒揚，用來教化百姓懂得堅守本心、心懷底線。康熙年間，昆明知縣主動上書朝廷，請求允許當地百姓祭拜薛爾望，這份請求順利得到準許。到了道光年間，負責云南文教的官員專程為墓園撰寫墓表，親手題寫墓碑文字，如今墓碑上 “明忠義薛爾望先生闔眷之墓” 十二個大字，依舊清晰可辨。
