前幾天的溫度讓人如同處在蒸籠之中，即便只是坐著，也會汗如雨下，非常難熬。最近的一個禮拜卻開始下雨，起初只是一兩個小時的小雨，后來雨卻越下越長，越下越大。如今，在臺風杜蘇芮的影響下，福建多地遭遇洪災，暴雨預警升級為最高級別的紅色預警。

許多外媒發布了相關報道，不過大都比較簡單，于是這次我挑選了半島電視臺的文章，用詞頗為生動。

Rain has soaked northern China as Typhoon Doksuri, one of the strongest storms to hit the country in years, forced authorities to evacuate thousands in Beijing after pummelling the Philippines and Taiwan, and lashing China’s coast.

整段譯文：作為數年來對中國影響最大的最強臺風之一，杜蘇芮在襲擊菲律賓和中國臺灣并侵襲中國沿海地區之后，雨水浸透了中國北部地區，迫使當局疏散了北京的數千人。

soak

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

臟衣服洗之前浸到有洗衣液的水里泡一泡，更方便除掉污垢。這個「浸泡」的動作就是 soak。另外，它還可以表示 to make something completely wet「使某物濕透」。

A sudden shower of rain soaked the spectators.

突如其來的一陣雨把觀眾淋了個透。

拓展內容：soak up

把自己「浸泡」在知識的海洋中，不正好能夠「學會」某項知識嗎？所以 soak up 用來表示 to learn something quickly and easily「迅速輕松地學會」，可替換常用的 learn，absorb。

Children soak up language incredibly quickly.

有哪些表示災害「侵襲」的表達？

01 hit

除了表示「打，擊」外，hit 還常用來表示各種災害的「侵襲」，比如，高溫熱浪、洪災等。這個用法我們此前在精讀中多次遇到，不再贅述。

02 hammer

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

這個動詞非常生動，名詞版 hammer 是「錘子」，所以作動詞時可以表示「錘打」。另引申為 to hurt someone or something by causing them a lot of problems「沖擊，打擊」。《南華》在報道此次臺風時用的便是 hammer，我們再來看《經濟學人》的一個示例。在這兒，hammer 不是指災害的侵襲，而是戰爭對收入的重創。

The war has triggered higher food and energy prices, which have hammered households’ disposable incomes.

戰爭引發?品和能源價格上漲，令居?的可支配收入大打折扣。

03 lash

lash 用來表示災害的侵襲，畫面感很強。它常用來表示「鞭打」，相當于 whip。臺風杜蘇芮登陸我國后，引發一系列洪澇災害，就像龐大的怪物對著手無寸鐵的人類揮鞭相向。除了本文，CNN 在報道的標題中也用了這個動詞，凸顯臺風的威力之強。

04 pummel

相比前幾個單詞，pummel 使用頻率最低。本是指「連續猛擊；捶打」這個動作，后來常用比喻義，表示「攻擊」或「批評」。

Her last movie was pummeled by the critics.

她的上一部影片連遭影評界惡評。

A broad area encompassing the capital faces a medium to high risk of rainstorm disasters over the coming three days, China’s national forecaster said. Thunderstorms in the capital were forecast to peak on Saturday.

整段譯文：中國國家氣象預報員表示，未來三天，首都周邊廣大地區將面臨從中級到高級的暴雨災害風險。據預測，首都的雷暴天氣將在周六達到高峰。

encompass

compass 本義是指南針，后來引申為「范圍」，所以動詞 encompass 意思就變成了 to include a wide range of ideas, subjects, etc「包含，包括」，統統都在這個范圍之內。2007 年的考研閱讀曾有這個動詞的身影。

Clearly, intelligence encompasses more than a score on a test.

顯然，智力包括不只一項測試的一次得分。

thunderstorm

指的是 a storm with thunder and lightning，又打雷閃電，還有暴雨的「雷暴」，主要發生于熱帶和溫帶地區。

“Doksuri’s intensity continues to weaken but the impact is far from over,” the China Meteorological Administration said, warning the public to be vigilant and avoid high-risk areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regions where localised rainfall could reach 600mm (two feet).

整段譯文：中國氣象局表示，「杜蘇芮的強度繼續減弱，但影響遠未結束。」氣象局提醒公眾提高警惕，避開京津冀地區的高風險區域，這些地區的局部降雨量可能達到 600 毫米（2 英尺）。

intensity

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

這個名詞脫胎自形容詞 intense「強烈的」，所以它用來表示 the state or quality of being intense 「強烈，劇烈」。既可以指天氣、災害等的「強烈程度」，也可以指 感情、觀點等的「激烈」。所以如果一個人「言辭激烈」，我們就可以用 speak with great intensity 來表達。2022 年的四級聽力中也有這個名詞，我們一起來讀一遍。

Western working culture tends to place a high value on the written word, and this reaches its highest level of intensity when it comes to contracts.

西方工作文化普遍高度重視書面文字，這一點在合同方面達到了極致。

the China Meteorological Administration /?mi?ti?r??l?d??k?l/

詞根詞綴

meteorological 派生自名詞 meterology。前面的 meteor- 意思是「高懸的」，比如 meteor「流星」就是高高掛在天上。-logy 或 -ology 常用來表示「某學科」，比如，geology「地質學」，climatology「氣候學」。所以 meteorology 指的是「氣象學」。整個表達是「中國氣象局」的英文名。

vigilant

用來表示 very careful to notice any signs of danger or trouble「警覺的；警惕的」，相當于 alert, watchful，不過 vigilant 要比 watchful 更加正式。圍繞健康相關的應用越來越多，去年《經濟學人》寫過一篇長文，我們管中窺只豹。

The vigilant bot may spot, for example, that you have a 20-minute gap between meetings and suggest you pop out for a walk to the coffee shop a few blocks away to do your steps.

例如，警覺的機器人可能會發現你在會議之間有 20 分鐘的空檔，于是建議你出去散個步，走到 幾個街區外的咖啡店，這樣就能完成一些步數。

swell

考研詞匯

swell 是個非常形象的動詞，它的基礎釋義是指臉、胳膊「腫了」。腫起來的包體積比之前大了不少。于是，swell 的另一個釋義就出現了：表示數量、體積等的「上升，增長」。在文章中，swell above warning levels 是指水位「越過警戒線」。warning levels 是指「警戒水位線」。

By the end of this month the size of the mission is expected to swell to 280 people...

到這個月底，參加該任務的人員規模將有望增至 280 人。

flash flood

指的是「暴洪」，又名「突發性洪水」。短時間內暴雨帶來極大的降雨量是這類洪水發生的主要原因。

hazard

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

hazard 常用來表示 something that may be dangerous, or cause accidents or problems「危險，隱患」，比如「火災隱患」是 a fire hazard。

金牌寫作

如果想表示「對某人構成威脅」，那么我們要加上 to，即 a hazard to sb。這個短語很適合用在氣候變暖、肥胖等負面話題中。

Growing levels of pollution represent a serious health hazard to the local population.

日益嚴重的污染對當地人民的健康構成了重大威脅。

geological hazards

geological 派生自 geology「地質學」，所以它的意思是「地質學的」。二者合起來便是「地質災害」。

metro services & subway stations

metro, subway，以及沒有在本文出現的 the underground 都是用來指「地鐵」，但為什么要用三種不同稱呼呢？the underground 用來表示「地鐵」的說法始于 1860s，當時英國建成了世界上第一條地鐵 The Metropolitan Railway。地鐵位于地下，所以被簡稱為 the underground。倫敦人也常形象地稱地鐵為 the tube「管子」。

不過，目前稱地鐵為 metro 和 subway 的人數要更多。1897 年，美國建成了本國第一條地鐵 The Tremont Street subway，如今有些英國人也稱地鐵為 subway。另外，很多美國人，尤其是紐約人，也會用 the train 來稱呼。

metro 則是源自法語，很多歐洲人更習慣這個稱呼。我國的地鐵修建時間不同，合作對象不同。所以北京地鐵的英文是 Beijing Subway，而上海地鐵則是 Shanghai Metro。

waterlogged

表示「水澇的，積水的」，比如 a waterlogged pitch 是指「積水太多的場地」。

resume operations

四級詞匯 + 考研詞匯

地鐵、公交等有時會發生故障，一切正常后會「恢復運營」，這四個的英文就是 resume operations。其中動詞 resume 表示 it begins again or continues after an interruption「重新開始；中斷后繼續」。后面既可以直接加名詞，如 resume talks「恢復會談」，也可以加 doing sth，如 resume driving「繼續開車」。我們來看 2020 年《經濟學人》的一個例句，其中 crèche 是「幼兒園」的意思，使用頻率很低。

As well as letting final-year secondary-school students facing exams resume classes, Denmark has also begun to reopen cre?ches and primary schools.

丹麥除了讓面臨畢業考試的中學畢業班復課外，幼兒園和小學也逐步開放。

precipitation /pr??s?p??te???n/

表示雨、雪等的「降水量」，所以「年降水量」是 annual precipitation。此外，它還是一個化學術語，表示「沉淀」。

家族成員：precipitate /pr??s?p?te?t/

動詞是 precipitate 表示 to make something serious happen suddenly or more quickly than was expected 「促成，加速」， 和 accelerate, quicken 類似。不過 precipitate 尤其指立即引發某件嚴重的事或壞事。

The riot was precipitated when four black men were arrested.

這場騷亂是因為四名黑人男子的被捕而突然引發的。
