By the same token, pressure to acknowledge climate-changing sins of the past—and demands for better policies now—are becoming harder to resist.

譯文：同樣地，不管是承認往日氣候變化之罪所帶來的壓力，還是今日需制定更優(yōu)政策的要求，都變得越來越難以抗拒。

by the same token

這是一個固定短語，表示「由于同樣的原因；同樣地」，作用是進一步說明后面提到的事情與前面的事情不同，相當(dāng)于 for the same reason。有時，我們可以根據(jù)語境譯為「相反」。看上去平平無奇，但很適合在寫作中用來對比。比如下面這句是把失敗和成功的結(jié)果進行對比。

The penalty for failure will be high. But, by the same token, the rewards for success will be great.

失敗就要付出沉重的代價。同理，成功會獲得很大的回報。

社會的發(fā)展離不開人與人之間的互幫互助。我們以此為主題造個句。

If people are disposed to help each other, a strong sense of community will be created. By the same token, if they are reluctant to lend a hand, people won’t stick together.

factor in sth

That would support the production of some 10m all-electric vehicles a year—more than half the cars now bought annually in America, a vast amount, especially when factoring in imports.

譯文：這將足以支持每年約 1000 萬輛純電汽車的產(chǎn)量——超過目前美國每年汽車購買量的一半。這個數(shù)字非常驚人，尤其是考慮到進口汽車量也包含在內(nèi)。

factor in sth

熟詞生義

factor 作名詞表示「因素」，人盡皆知。但它還可以用作動詞，表示 to include a particular fact or situation when you are thinking about or planning sth，意思是「把……因素考慮在內(nèi)，將……計入」。所以，有些時候它可以替換常用的 consider。

Remember to factor in staffing costs when you are planning the project.

規(guī)劃該項目時，記住要把雇人費用這個因素考慮進去。

2021.12英語六級完形中也曾用過這個短語。其中，concede 是「承認」，和 admit 相近，對應(yīng)名詞是 concession，都屬于六級詞匯。

The researchers conceded that the link found in the new study was not as strong when they factored in the effects of certain health behaviors, including exercise levels, sleep habits and diet.

研究人員承認，當(dāng)把鍛煉水平、睡眠習(xí)慣和飲食等健康行為產(chǎn)生的影響考慮進去之后，這樣新的研究發(fā)現(xiàn)樂觀和長壽之間的關(guān)聯(lián)并沒有那么大。

譯文：但對于整個錄制音樂行業(yè)而言，這些機器人的出現(xiàn)讓人聯(lián)想到行業(yè)歷史上的一個重大事件：Napster 的迅速崛起與衰落。

at large

《新概念》3 Lesson 1 的標(biāo)題叫做 A Puma at Large。通過那篇文章，我第一次認識 at large，不知道你是不是跟我一樣？短語意思是危險的人或動物等「在逃的，逍遙法外的」。我們來一起讀下原文。

The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

搜尋工作進行了幾個星期，但始終未能逮住那只美洲獅。想到寧靜的鄉(xiāng)村中還有一頭危險的野獸繼續(xù)逍遙流竄，真令人擔(dān)心。

而這個詞組還有另一條釋義，意思是「整個，全部」，相當(dāng)于 as a who le 和 in general。比如，the population at large 是指「全部人口，全人類」，the society at large 是指「全社會」。
