諾貝爾文學家昨晚于北京時間 19 點公布，瑞典學院將 2023 年度諾貝爾文學獎頒給挪威的劇作家約恩 · 福瑟 (Jon Fosse)。他的代表作名為《三部曲》，曾斬獲北歐理事會文學獎，包含三大聯系緊密的部分：《醒來》《奧拉夫的夢》和《疲倦》。

眾多外刊進行了報道，其中 CNN 這篇比較詳細，而且很多單詞的用法巧妙。看上去與我們熟識已久，卻是新朋友。所以今天跟以往的外刊精讀不同，我們專講五個「熟詞生義」。

01 go to sb

go to sb / sth

go to 無人不知，無人不曉。但今天我們要揭開它的另一面。眾多媒體報道諾貝爾把某獎項頒給誰時，多用了 award 一詞。

但我們還可換成一個更為形象的表達 go to sb / sth。獎項像是有腳一樣「走」到了獲獎人面前。此時這個短語表示 to be given to sb / sth「被授予某人」。注意咯，是被授予，所以它相當于被動的 be awarded。

Proceeds from the concert will go to charity.

音樂會的收入將捐贈給慈善事業。

02 give voice to sth

give voice to sth

「表達」感情、想法時，我們常用 express，簡練卻常見，不妨換成 give voice to sth。unsayable 看似是一個形容詞，實際還有名詞詞性，表示「難言之事」。所以瑞典文學院這句話 give voice to the unsayable 我們可譯為「表達了無法言說的心聲」。

Participants are encouraged to give voice to their personal hopes, fears and dreams.

參加者被鼓勵要把自己的愿望、擔憂以及夢想表達出來。

03 detail

The novel details the struggle of Asle, the narrator, to complete his painting – and compares him throughout to another Asle, who is also a painter but is consumed by alcohol, who functions as his doppelganger. The novel asks how we become the people we become by staging two versions of the same person against one another.

01 detail

detail 表示「細節」這一點人盡皆知，但它還可以作動詞，表示 to list things or give all the facts or information about something「詳細說明，詳述」。學會這個單詞后，當需要介紹一本書、一份報告、一篇論文時，我們就可以放棄大眾款 depict，投向 detail 的懷抱。

The report details the progress we have made over the last year.

報告詳述了去年我們取得的進展。

2021 年《經濟學人》也是用到了 detail 的動詞詞性。

Ontario in Canada spent 30 years talking about reforming its property tax, before eventually taking the plunge in 1998, as detailed by Richard Bird and Enid Slack of the University of Toronto.

02 go into details

當它重新變成名詞時，我們可以構成 go into details 這個詞組，當然你也可以寫成 go into the detail，后面再加上 of sth，用來表示 to explain sth fully「詳細敍述某事」。不過在書面語中，這個詞組出現頻率低于下面的另一詞組。

Neither of them were prepared to go into the detail of their talks.

他們倆都沒準備要詳細說明他們會談的情況。

03 expand on / upon sth

expand 除了表示「擴大」外，還可以搭配 on，意思于是發生了變化，表示 to add more details or information to something that you have already said「詳述，進一步說明」。2023 年 3 月的六級聽力中就出現了這個短語。

When we came to the part about discussing my areas for growth, he bluntly told me that I had an attitude problem. But he wouldn't really expand on that description.

當我們談到我的發展領域時，他直截了當地告訴我，我的態度有問題。但他并沒有進一步說明。

04 consume

05 stage

stage

stage 作名詞時，既可以表示「舞臺」，也可以表示「階段」。一個演員可以登上舞臺，而一件事也可以通過作家、編劇們的描寫，而被搬上舞臺。此時，stage 有了另一個詞性，也有了另一個含義，即 to arrange or do「安排；籌劃」。

The actors' public appearances were carefully staged.

這名演員的公開露面都是經過精心安排的。
