“你就為了五十塊銀元，手指都不要了？”她的聲音在發顫。陳大同沒接話，把門檻上的銀元往她面前推了推。婉芹沒看銀元，盯著他的手看了很久，然后蹲下去，把那塊包著銀元的布打開，把銀元一塊一塊地數數，正好五十塊她又把銀元放回去。

婉芹站起來，把他那只缺了小指的手拉過來，輕輕握住了。那只手粗糙得像松樹皮，指根全是硬繭，斷指的傷口還沒長好，泛著紅。她不敢碰，只敢握著手心那一小塊還算完好的地方。他的手指蜷了蜷，沒抽回去。“別的我不要了，就要你這個人。”她說著自己先哭了，也不知道是說給他聽還是說給自己聽。婉芹哭著說你為了錢，手指都不要了。

后娘從屋里出來，看見了那一包銀元，看見了陳大同那只殘了的手，看見了婉芹握著他的手。她張了張嘴，沒喊出來，又縮回屋去了。

門“嘎吱”一聲關上，院子里安靜下來。頭頂的槐樹枝椏遮了半邊天，細碎的花瓣落下來，幾片停在陳大同的肩上，又有幾片擦著婉芹的鬢角滑下去，無聲無息。陳大同把銀元拿起放回婉芹手里。“你拿著。給你娘還賭債。”“我不要。”婉芹塞回去，推他的時候那只斷指隔著布硌了一下她的手心，“拿著，能娶到你，少一節手指又算什么呢？”他把五十塊銀元遞給婉芹。

他把手慢慢從她手心里抽出來，又從口袋里摸出一包用牛皮紙裹的東西，塞進婉芹手里。“桂花糕。”紙包隔著婉芹的手心，還帶著他體溫的余熱。陳大同轉過身，往院門口走。走了幾步，停下來，沒回頭。“你等我。”他走了。婉芹抱著那包桂花糕，站在槐樹下，看著他的背影消失在土路盡頭。她想喊他，嘴張開又合上了。她想追出去，腿邁不動。她把那包桂花糕貼在胸口，蹲下來，哭了很久。他還遞給她一包糕花糕。
