Good morning.

Two years ago, I stood on these steps and said that Britain deserved better. Today I come here to make a different announcement.

I entered public life to serve this country, to fix what was broken, and to rebuild trust in our politics. When I took over as Labour leader, our party was broken—politically, financially, and morally broken. Many wrote us off entirely. We turned that around. We rooted out antisemitism from our ranks, restored economic credibility, rebuilt our national security posture, repaired our standing with European allies, stood firmly with Ukraine, and delivered tangible progress for working people, renters, families across our nation.

Winning the 2024 general election remains the proudest moment of my life. To lead Labour back into government after years in opposition was an immense honour, one I never took for granted.

In recent weeks, our party has faced a clear question: am I still the right person to lead Labour into the next general election? I have listened carefully to the views of our parliamentary party. I have heard their answer, and I accept that answer openly and willingly.

Therefore, I am resigning as Leader of the Labour Party.

I have spoken this morning with His Majesty the King to inform him of my decision. Until a new Labour leader is elected, I will continue to serve as Prime Minister, to oversee stable governance, to keep government business running fully, and to ensure an orderly, calm transition of leadership.

I have instructed Labour’s National Executive Committee to set out the formal timetable for the leadership contest. Nominations will open on 9 July. We will complete the process so a new leader is in place before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September. I will give my full support to whoever emerges as the new leader. Every choice I have made in public office has been guided by putting our country first, and that principle will guide me through this transition too.

Serving as Prime Minister carries the heaviest public duty anyone can undertake. It has consumed much of my time, my energy, and my focus. After this period in office, I now wish to step back from frontline party leadership to devote more time to my family—to be a better husband to Victoria, and a present father to our children. That is a responsibility I have too often put aside amid the demands of governing.

I thank every member of my cabinet, every minister, every civil servant who has worked tirelessly alongside me these past two years. I thank Labour members, activists and voters who placed their trust in us. I thank my wife and children for their patience, sacrifice and quiet support through every difficult day.

Britain faces serious challenges ahead. Those challenges will not disappear. They demand steady leadership, unity within our party, and a clear path forward for our nation. I trust Labour will come together, choose its next leader wisely, and keep working to build a fairer, stronger Britain for all.

兩年前，我站在這級臺階上說，英國理應擁有更好的治理。今日，我來到這里，做出另一項宣告。

我投身公共事業，初衷便是為國履職、修補弊病、重建民眾對政治的信任。當初接任工黨領袖時，我們的政黨深陷困局——政治層面、財政層面、道德層面均瀕臨崩壞，不少人斷定工黨已然沒落。但我們扭轉了局面：肅清黨內反猶主義弊病、重塑經濟公信力、完善國家安全部署、修復英國與歐洲盟友關系、堅定聲援烏克蘭，同時為本國勞動者、租房群體與普通家庭帶來實實在在的改善。

贏得2024年大選，是我此生最為自豪的時刻。歷經多年在野后帶領工黨重返執政席位，這份殊榮我始終心存敬畏。

近段時日，黨內出現一個核心疑問：我是否仍是帶領工黨迎戰下一屆大選的合適人選？我認真傾聽了工黨議會黨團的意見，聽清了大家給出的答復，并且坦然、自愿接受這一結果。

故此，我正式辭去工黨領袖一職。

今日清晨我已與國王陛下通話，告知此項決定。在新任工黨領袖選舉產生前，我將繼續履行首相職責，維持政務平穩運轉，保障權力交接有序穩妥。

我已要求工黨全國執行委員會擬定黨魁選舉正式日程：提名環節將于7月9日啟動，整套選舉流程將趕在議會9月夏季休會結束復會前完成。無論最終何人當選新任黨魁，我都會給予全力支持。公職生涯中我的每一項抉擇，始終以國家利益為先，此番交接階段亦會恪守這一原則。

首相一職承載著一國最重的公職責任，它耗費了我絕大多數時間、精力與心力。履職至今，我希望退離政黨一線領導崗位，把更多時間歸還家庭——做維多利亞更盡責的丈夫，做陪伴子女的父親。過往執政重壓之下，這份家庭責任我時常無暇顧及。

感謝本屆內閣全體閣員、各位政務大臣、全體公職人員兩年來不辭辛勞的共事；感謝每一位工黨黨員、活動人士與選民給予我們的信任；感謝我的妻子與子女，在無數艱難時日里包容犧牲、默默相伴。

英國前路仍面臨諸多嚴峻挑戰，難題不會自行消散，國家需要穩健的領導力、黨內團結，以及清晰的前行方向。我相信工黨能夠凝心聚力、審慎選出新任領袖，繼續為全體國民建設更公平、更強大的英國而努力。
