wake up to sth

Investors are waking up to the risks of overstretched directors spreading their time too thinly.

譯文：身兼數職的董事們精力太過分散，投資者逐漸嗅到了其中的風險。

這次我先不講解，而是拋給大家一個問題。去年六月的四級翻譯題是讓我們翻譯「拔苗助長」的成語故事。最后這句話你會怎么翻譯呢？思考十秒鐘，再往下滑。

現在有些家長急于讓孩子成功，往往步那個農夫的后塵，搞得孩子苦不堪言，卻不見孩子學業長進。這樣的家長是否該對這個問題有所醒悟，讓孩子自然成長呢？

wake up to sth

今天的地道寫作將以一個看上去簡單卻非常好用的短語開始。大家都知道 wake 表示「醒來」，但 wake up to sth 卻用來表示 to start to realize and understand a danger, an idea etc「意識到，覺察到」某種危險、想法等。我們可以用這個短語來代替用了無數次的 realize ，或 be aware of sth 。

Countries are finally waking up to the fact that the environment should be cleaned up.

各國終于開始意識到應該整治環境這個事實。

回到剛才的那句中文，大家現在是否有了新的翻譯版本？「 醒悟 」是指從愚昧糊涂的狀態中覺醒，意識到自己之前的想法或態度等不對。所以原文的「對這個問題有所醒悟」相當于「覺察到或意識到某個問題」，我們可以用 wake up to this problem 來翻譯。

這樣的家長是否該對這個問題有所醒悟，讓孩子自然成長呢？

Should these parents wake up to this problem, allowing their children to grow up in a natural way?

近幾年遠程醫療成了熱門議題。雖然處于發展初期，但很多研究人員卻意識到這種新型醫療模式的巨大潛力。還記得我們前不久學過的 pertinent 和 in its infancy 嗎？一并用上它們。好，我們以「遠程醫療」為題，寫出整個句子。

While online health-care is still in its infancy in a sense, some researchers, who are waking up to its tremendous potential, call for more investment in pertinent technology training.

雖然從某種意義上說，遠程醫療仍處于起步階段，但一些研究人員意識到其巨大的潛力，呼吁對相關的技術培訓加大投資力度。

amount to sth

Thirty years ago directors amounted to little more than window dressing, recalls Charles Elson, a boardroom veteran and corporate-governance expert at the University of Delaware.

譯文：特拉華大學（University of Delaware）的公司治理專家查爾斯 · 埃爾森（Charles Elson）長期擔任公司董事，他回憶說，那幫三十年前的董事們不過是用來裝點門面而已。

amount to sth

這個表達在外刊中出現頻率很高，主要有兩個意思。第一，amount to sth 可以表示「總計」， 相當于動詞版 total, add up to sth 。比如， amount to ￥100 意思是「總計一百元」。

第二， 這個短語還可以表示 to be equal to or the same as sth「等于，相當于」。但表示「相當于」 的時候，amount to 后面一般不用來指兩個數字的等同，而是指兩種行為、兩件事的性質一 樣。

Her answer amounted to a complete refusal.

她的答覆等于完全拒絕。

2018 年英語一第四篇閱讀中用到了這個短語。bare 在這兒不是「裸露的」，而是「最低限度的」。 the bare minimum 構成了一個固定搭配，表示「最低限度的，數量最少的」。而 necessary 的詞性也發生了變化，不是作形容詞，而是名詞，表示「必需之物」。所以 the bare minimum necessary 意思是「滿足經營所需的最低要求」。

If it clears the House, this measure would still have to get through the Senate — where someone is bound to point out that it amounts to the bare, bare minimum necessary to keep the Postal Service afloat, not comprehensive reform.

如果提案獲眾議院批準，還必須經參議院通過。到時一定會有人指出， 該提案僅僅只能滿足郵政經營所需的最低、最低要求，并非徹底的改革。

將來你想去大城市還是小城市呢？對于打工人來說，離家工作后，房租成了一大心病，怎么描述房租之貴呢？如果只說金額的話，尚不足以表現出來。2000 的房租看上去不貴，但如果一個人只能掙 4000，這個對比瞬間讓讀者知道究竟有多貴了。我們以「大城市和小城市的利弊」為主題，在描述 大城市 劣勢 時可以這樣寫：

Metropolises are notorious for disproportionately high rent prices, which may amount to half of the monthly income.

大城市以房租極為高昂而聞名，租金可能相當于月收入的一半。

gain upside

This would mean accepting the “first loss” if things did not work out, but also gaining some of the upside if they went well.

譯文：這將意味著，如果事情進展不順，該機構需要承受「第一損失」，但如果進展順利，就能獲得一些好處。

upside & gain upside

提到「優點，好處」你會怎么表達呢？不能再只想到 advantage, benefit 啦。如果你腦中還是這哥倆，那可得記住下面這個新單詞。upside 意思是 the more positive aspect of a situation that is generally bad，指的是不利局面中「好的一面」，或者某件事的「優點，好處」。所以，如果你想說某事有好處，那就可以用 upside 來表達。在上面這個句子中， gain upside 的含義為「獲益」。

The upside of the whole thing is that we got a free trip to Jamaica.

整個事情的好處是我們免費去了一趟牙買加。

句型：It is not all upside for sb, though.

再來看 2020 年《經濟學人》有關資產管理的一個例句。我們可以從中提煉出一個句型， It is not all upside for sb though. 意思是說「這不全是好事」。針對那些需要我們討論某事利弊的話題，當寫完「利」后，我們可以用這個句型作為「弊」的過渡。

The partners who join it would receive 70% of the shares (the remaining 15% would be for lowlier staff). It is not all upside for the consultants, though.

加入咨詢部?的合伙人將獲得 70% 的股份（剩下的 15% 會分配給較低級別的員工）。不過，對咨詢顧問們來說，這也不全是好事。

反義詞：downside

upside 的反義詞是不是很容易就能想到？把 up 變成 down，就出現了反義詞 downside 「不足之處，缺點」。以后想表達「利弊」就不要只用 advantages and disadvantages 咯。

The downside of the book is that it is written in a rather boring style.

這本書的缺點是寫作風格太單調。
