今天我們來學習四組同義替換，包括一組副詞，一組形容詞，兩組動詞。我所挑出來的這些詞匯不僅可以用在閱讀、翻譯、寫作中，還會在聽力中出現，大家要引起重視哦。

嚴格來說，它們應該是「同近義替換」。因為很少會有一個單詞與另一個單詞完全相同的情況。

01

solely 僅僅，只

solely = only / merely / industrious

This was an exciting result because it showed that the body's stress responses are not determined solely by one's grades.

sole

多數同學應該都知道 solely 的意思，表示「僅僅」，然而在大家的寫作中，似乎沒有同學用過， 仍舊是 only 大行其道。solely 派生自形容詞 sole。注意咯，我們要和 soul「靈魂」區分開。sole 常表示「僅有的，唯一的」，比如，your sole aim 是指「唯一目標」。

solely 自然就有了 not involving anything or anyone else「唯一地，僅僅」之義。我們在看一些測評視頻時，常聽到博主說「本測試僅對送檢樣品負責」，用英文來表達就是 The test is solely responsible for submitted samples.

Too often we make decisions based solely upon what we see in the magazines.

太多時候，我們僅僅根據在雜志上面所看到的東西就作出了決定。

prevailing 流行的

prevailing = popular / current

This and other research challenge the prevailing view that emotional intelligence is uniformly beneficial to its bearer.

譯文：目前盛行的觀點是，情商對其擁有者而言只有益處。而這項研究以及其他研究向該觀點發起了挑戰。

在講解 solely 時，我用到了一個成語「大行其道」，意思是某種風氣、觀點等很流行。如果用英文來翻譯的話，我們用一個詞就可以——prevail。這個動詞用來表示 to exist or be very common「盛行，流行」，主語常常是觀點、信念、風俗等。

Those beliefs still prevail among certain social groups.

這些信念在某些社會群體中仍很盛行。

所以，形容詞 prevailing 用來表示「流行的，盛行的」，我們可以用它來替換常見到不能更常見的 popular，有時候也能替換 current。我們來看 2019 年六級閱讀的一句話。

This is surprising when you consider the prevailing emphasis by scholars and trainers and managers on the importance of cultivating close interpersonal relationships at work.

當你想到學者、培訓師、管理者都普遍強調工作中培養親密人際關系的重要性時，不免感到奇怪。

deteriorate 惡化

deteriorate = go worse

The dust and toxic chemicals you bring into your house via your shoes can deteriorate the air quality in your home.

譯文：鞋子帶進家里的灰塵和有毒化學物質會使你家里的空氣質量惡化。

下面我們再來看兩組動詞的替換。表示情況「變差」，我們往往會想到詞組 go worse，但如果你能用一個動詞 deteriorate 來概括，能讓閱卷老師看到你豐富的詞匯量。它的意思是 to become worse，既可以指情況、氣候等「惡化，變差」，也可以指一個人的健康狀況逐漸「惡化」。在講 GE 通用電氣的歷史時，《經濟學人》用到了這個動詞。

However, after 2003 GE’s industrial businesses continued to deteriorate; their returns on capital collapsed and cashflow dried up.

然而，2003 年之后 GE 的業績繼續惡化，資本回報率暴跌，現金流枯竭。

除了單獨使用外，它也可以構成短語 deteriorate into sth，意思是 to develop into a bad or worse situation「演變成某事」，多指變成更糟糕的局面。

The discussion quickly deteriorated into an angry argument.

picture 想象

picture = imagine

In fact, it's hard to picture any kind of disruptive activity at all (unless someone'scell phone happens to go off, and then you'd better watch your back).

熟詞生義

在寫作中，我們常會用到 imagine 這個詞來表示假設的某種情形，也常用 picture 來表示「圖片」。但這只是 picture 的用法之一，它還可以表示腦中形成的「情景，印象」。

I have a vivid picture of my grandfather smiling down at me when I was very small.

我清楚地記得很小的時候祖父向我低頭微笑的情景。

此外，它還能作動詞，表示 to create an image of sb / sth in your mind「想象，設想」，而且它是一個及物動詞，后面直接加賓語。比如， picturing the scene「想象那個場景」。有一些探家博主會去探訪一些知名博主的家，如果你從沒想到這些博主的家究竟是這樣一番樣子，你可以說：

I never would have pictured this as his/her home.

我怎么也想不出他/她的家會是這樣。
