連續看了幾篇 AI 相關的《經濟學人》文章，所以這次我挑選出來的幾個同義替換很適合用在 AI、機器人等主題的文章中。當然，它們的用途遠不止于此。因為這幾個詞或詞組的使用范圍比較廣。

for the time being 暫時

for the time being = temporarily

Although Messrs Frey and Osborne still have a few years to be proved right, and Mr Musk can be safely ignored for the time being, the earlier fears about job-killing technology never materialised.

for the time being

這是一個固定短語，表示 for a short period of time from now, but not permanently「眼下，暫時」，可以替換 temporarily。注意哦，替換的是副詞，而不是形容詞 temporary。這個短語的使用頻率比較高，我們再來看《經濟學人》的另一個例句。

這句話中還有個單詞值得注意。我們經常需要在寫作中提到「某事或某個目標即將成為現實」，所以 come true 或 become a reality 成為我的常用搭配。除了這倆外，我們還可以直接用一個單詞 materialize 概括。英式為 materialise。不過，相比前面那哥倆，materialize 更常用于否定句。當然，不絕對，下面的《經濟學人》就是用于肯定的例子。

seismic = important / significant / major

這個詞大家可能很少在考試中看到，但在外刊中不算罕見。seismic 原本指「地震的；地震引起的」，前綴 seismo- 表示「地震」，比如 seismology 是「地震學」。

地震會給當地帶來重大影響，所以外刊常用到 seismic 的第二個義項，即 having a very great effect; of very great size「 影響深遠的；重大的」，比如 seismic social changes 是指「重大社會變革」。在一篇有關人口結構的文章中，《經濟學人》用到了這樣一個搭配 a seismic demographic shift，意思是「人口結構巨變」。

do away with sth 擺脫

do away with sth = get rid of sth

Last month the boss of IBM, a computing giant, forecast that AI will do away with much white-collar clerical work.

do away with sth

表示「擺脫」，你首先會想到哪個詞組呢？詞組 do away with 后面如果加 sb，表示「殺人」，而如果加 sth，則 表示 to remove it completely or cause the end of it「擺脫；取消」。在不同的語境中，我們可以用它來替換 put an end to sth, get rid of, eliminate, cancel 等。所以，當我們寫作文想表示機器人或者 AI 能夠讓人擺脫枯燥的工作時，就可以用上這個短語。詞典中的這個例句和《經濟學人》的例句異曲同工。

People thought that the use of robots would do away with boring low-paid factory jobs.

人們以為使用了機器人就能擺脫工廠里乏味的低收入工作了。
