熟詞生義

close 誰見誰眼熟，但在這兒它不再是「關閉」，而是 to end or to make something end, especially in a particular way「結束，終止」。比如，你發表總結，結束了會議，「結束會議」便可以寫成 close a meeting。如果我們不想要現在的賬戶，想要注銷，這個「注銷」仍舊是 close。「注銷賬戶」的英文就是 close an account。是不是覺得 close 平時不顯山不漏水，肚子里的東西還挺多?

在標題中，closes $69 billion acquisition 應該寫成 closes a/its $69 billion acquisition，才符合語法。不過新聞媒體的文章有個特殊性，標題常會省略一些虛詞、代詞等，所以標題沒問題。

acquisition

四級詞匯 + 烤鴨詞匯

動詞為 acquire。除了表示「獲得」外，在經濟類新聞中，acquisition 多用來表示「收購」。比如，mergers and acquisitions 意思是「合并和收購」。下面我們讀一讀《經濟學人》講壟斷現象的例句。

lengthy

四級詞匯

Microsoft has closed its $69 billion acquisition of video game publisher Activision Blizzard, according to a regulatory filing by the company Friday. It’s Microsoft’s largest deal in its 48-year history and comes after the company quelled concerns about competition from U.K. and European regulators and gained a favorable ruling from a U.S. district judge.

filing

filing 派生自 file。file 常用來表示「文件」，而 filing 則是 the work of arranging documents in the correct files「存檔，歸檔」。不過這條釋義下，filing 是不可數名詞。文中卻是可數名詞，所以這里的 filing 實則為「文件，檔案」。因此句中 a regulatory filing 是指「監管文件」。同理，a bankruptcy filing 是指「破產檔案」。

quell concerns

quell 是動詞，表示 to stop sth such as violent behaviour or protests「平息，鎮壓」。新聞中時不時提到「平息騷亂」，英文便可用 quell the disturbances 來表達。

在本句中，quell 跟武力無關，而是表示 to stop or reduce strong or unpleasant feelings「消除，緩解」某種情緒，類似 relieve, alleviate 或 dispel,elliminate 等。比如，quell your fears 是指「消除恐懼」。

This latest setback will have done nothing to quell the growing doubts about the future of the club.

ruling

熟詞生義

ruling 派生自 rule。作名詞時，rule 是我們非常熟悉的「規則」。此外，它也常作動詞出現，表示 to control and have authority over a country, a group of people, etc.「控制，統治」。

African tribal societies were traditionally ruled by a council of elders.

非洲部落社會傳統上由長老會統治。

portfolio 常見于金融類文章，外刊常用，指 a set of shares owned by a particular person or organization 個人或機構的「投資組合，有價證券組合」。比如，an investment portfolio 是指「投資組合」。怎么理解呢？舉個簡單的例子，如果你同時持有股票、基金，你的投資種類不單一，這就可以稱之為「投資組合」。好，又是一個《經濟學人》例句。

The most out-there part of Alphabet’s health portfolio is an effort to slow the ageing process—or stop it altogether.

Alphabet 的健康投資組合中最前衛的是一個想延緩或完全阻止衰老的項目。

reel in sth

這個詞組什么意思呢？reel 作名詞有「卷軸」的意思，你把卷軸往里卷，就能把線聚攏到軸上，所以，reel in sth 是釣魚佬的最愛，表示「卷，釣」，因此「釣魚」的英文可寫成 reel the fish in。

另一方面，這個短語還引申為 to get or attract a large number of people or things，表示「吸引」大量的人或物。我們前不久剛學過一個類似的短語，是什么來著？pull in。

The FTC In July asked the San Francisco federal district court for a preliminary injunction to stop Microsoft and Activision from closing their deal before receiving full approval. But after five days of hearings, a judge sided with the two companies. The agency took the case to the U.S. Appeals Court for the 9th Circuit, which denied a motion to temporarily stop the consummation of the deal.

要想理解這個詞，需要理解美國一般侵權案件的流程，通常包括取證、立案、禁令、審判和賠償。在法院受理案件的同時，原告會可申請法院簽發臨時禁令，英文為 Temporary Restraining Order，簡稱 TRO。其有效期通常為 14 天。如果之后還需要效力更長的禁令，原告會再次申請簽發初步禁令，即 PIO，全名為 Preliminary Injunction Order。

其中，preliminary 用來表示 happening before something that is more important, often in order to prepare for it「初步的，預備的」，類似 initial。因此「初稿」我們可以說 a preliminary draft。injunction 則是法院的「強制令，禁制令」。下面我們來看《經濟學人》有關 BYD 比亞迪的報道。

consummation

動詞是 consummate，其中一個含義為 to make sth complete「完成」，但通常只用來表示完成交易合同等，因此不能完全等同于 complete。比如，consummate an agreement 表示「達成協議」，相當于 reach an agreement。
