考研詞匯

我們在寫作中較少用到，但外刊閱讀中經常能?到它。來自動詞 allege，表示 to state sth as a fact but without giving proof「斷言，聲稱」或「指控」。這種斷言往往沒有給出對應的證據。allege 常用于被動語態，且跟 that 從句或者不定式搭配。

It was alleged that the restaurant discriminated against black customers.

據稱該飯館歧視黑人顧客。

所以， alleged 表示「被指稱的，涉嫌的」。通常和少數幾個名詞 crime, offence 等搭配。比如，alleged crime「被指稱的罪行」。我們來看《經濟學人》針對 Google 母公司的一篇報道。

misconduct

詞根詞綴 + 四級 + 考研詞匯

這個詞我們在 那篇剛講過，不知道大家是否還記得它？misconduct 是指「行為不端」，比如 academic misconduct「學術不端」。

censorship

派生自動詞 censor「審查」，所以 censorship 指的是 the practice or system of censoring something 「審查；審查制度」。AI 人工智能的發展帶來了一些令人擔憂的問題，來看《經濟學人》的總結。

outcry

這個名詞來自動詞詞組 cry out，意思是因害怕、驚訝等「大叫，叫喊」。比如 cry out in alarm「驚慌得大叫起來」。不過名詞 outcry 意思與之有些區別，指的是 an angry protest by a lot of ordinary people，中文為公眾的「強烈抗議，反對」。那「激起抗議」怎么說呢？ cause an outcry，或 provoke an outcry。

The closure of the local hospital has caused a huge public outcry.

當地醫院的關閉激起了大規模的公眾抗議。

01 steal the spotlight

spotlight 是我們的老朋友了，表示「聚光燈」。在舞臺上，聚光燈通常會被投射到主角身上，引導觀眾追隨主角的動向。所以 the spotlight 引申為 attention from newspapers, television and the public 「媒體或公眾的關注」。因此，steal the spotlight 不是把聚光燈偷走，而是把觀眾的注意力「偷走」。這和我們漢語中的「搶鏡」或者「搶風頭」意思一致。

02 steal the scene

除了用 steal the spotlight，我們還可以用 steal the scene / show / limelight 來表示相同含義。

Elwood stole the show with a marvellous performance.

埃爾伍德的表演極為出色，搶足了風頭。

03 photobomb

讀 Elon Musk《馬斯克傳》時，遇到了一個新詞 photobomb，中文也譯為「搶鏡」，但跟上面這倆短語不太一樣。photobomb 指的是在別人拍照時「亂入鏡頭」。

He photobombed the actress as she was posing for the press.

那名女演員擺姿勢給媒體拍照時，他突然闖入鏡頭。

04 hog the spotlight

之前在 咱們還學過另一個搭配。 hog 原本指「肉豬」，可能是豬愛搶食，所以 hog 作動詞時表示「在此為動詞，表示「獨占，把……占為己有」。所以 hog the spotlight 也可以表示「搶鏡，大出風頭」。

point fingers at sb

用手指人很不禮貌，這點中外達成了共識。所以 point fingers at sb/sth 意思是 to blame someone or say that they have done something wrong「指責某人，責怪某人」。如果想翻譯得更形象，我們還可以譯為「將矛頭指向某人」。來看《經濟學人》的這個例句。

Yet CEOs say the job has got harder. Most point the finger at “disruption”, the idea that competition is more intense.

但CEO們說這份工作越來越難做了。他們大多都將矛頭指向了「顛覆」——意指競爭愈發激烈了。

家族成員：finger-pointing

當我們把二者的順序調換，point 變成 pointing，就變出了名詞 finger-pointing，意思是「指責」某人。其中，name-calling 也是來自動詞詞組 call sb names「辱罵某人」。

repercussion

在英語中，除了 influence, impact 等表示「影響」外，還有很多其他詞匯，repercussion 就是其中之一。它的特殊點在于通常用來表示不好的「影響，后果」，英文釋義為 an indirect and usually bad result of an action or event。另一需要注意的是，它通常用復數 repercussions。比如，「經濟影響」economic repercussions。

詞組搭配：have repercussions for sth

如果想表示「對某事產生了負面影響」，那么可以用上這個詞組：have repercussions for sth。如果想突出嚴重程度，還可以加上形容詞 serious, enormous 或 tremendous 等。

The collapse of the company will have repercussions for the whole industry.

這家公司的垮臺將會給整個行業造成間接的負面影響。

tarnish the reputation

動詞 tarnish，原本表示「使金屬等失去光澤」，如果一個人的名譽失去了光澤，意味著名譽受損。所以 tarnish 后來衍生出另一條釋義，指「玷污，損害」名譽、形象等。與 taint, stain 等是近義詞。「受損的形象」便是 tarnished image。好，我們來看《經濟學人》有關香港的一個例句。

That has tarnished its appeal relative to Singapore, another entrepot with a common-law legal system, business-friendly regulation and low taxes.

這使得它相比另一轉口港新加坡的吸引力下降，后者擁有普通法體系、宜商監管制度和低稅率。
