renowned

六級詞匯

這個形容詞派生自名詞 renown，表示 fame and respect because of sth you have done that people admire「名譽，聲望」。這個詞也兼有動詞詞性，但極少使用。renowned 作為形容詞，表示「著名的」，所以——我們能用它來替換 famous。之前給大家總結過，不曉得你有沒有印象呢？

有哪些表示「大亨」的花樣表達？

01 tycoon

長得像 typhoon「臺風」但人家是 tycoon，指的是企業界的 a person who is successful in business or industry and has become rich and powerful 「巨頭，大亨」。雖然不是四六級或考研詞匯，但外刊很常用到。來看下面的《經濟學人》例句。

Twenty-two of this group were controlled outright by corporations and tycoons, or had been until they were recently forced to restructure.

其中 22 家銀行完全受控于企業和大亨，或者說，在近期被迫重組前一直如此。

02 mogul /?m??ɡ?l/

長得有點像 Mongol「蒙古人」的 mogul 也是指「大亨」，「傳媒業大亨」就是 media mogul。

03 baron

今天怎么有這么多長得相像的單詞。有些同學是不是聽說過 Barron’s 這家外媒？這是美國出版的有關金融信息和市場新聞的出版物，創刊于 1921 年。它與《華爾街日報》同屬于道瓊斯集團。而這少了一個 r 的 baron 卻是指工商業的「巨頭」。比如，a press baron「報業大王」。

近義詞：self-made

make 可以表示「成功」，所以 self-made 用來形容人「靠自己奮斗成功的，白手起家的」。這個形容詞也是只放在名詞前，而非后面。

feud with sb

feud 表示「長期不和；世仇，積怨」，要說最知名的世仇家族，當屬朱麗葉和羅密歐兩家了。

相像詞辨析：feudal

feudal 跟 feud 很像，它倆是不是一家的，feudal 是不是對應的形容詞？其實不是。feudal 表示「封建的」，來自拉丁語，對應名詞是 feudalism「封建主義」；feud 卻是來自中古英語。2018 年英一考研閱讀有這樣一句話。

六級 + 考研詞匯

profile 有不少釋義，既可以表示「側影」，也可以表示「輪廓，外形」，還可表示「簡介」，比如，a job profile 指的是「工作簡介」。來看 2020 年 9 月六級閱讀理解中的一句話。

很多同學都知道 virtual 表示「虛擬的」。此外，它還可表示「幾乎的，實質上的」。所以 virtually 這個副詞有「幾乎，實際上」之義，類似 practically, almost。多次在各考試中出現。2020 年英二的閱讀中就有它。

此外，幾乎所有的美國大公司都在以這樣或那樣的方式成為科技公司。

identical

四級 + 考研詞匯

是不是和 identity 很像呢？它倆是一家人嗎？這次你答對了。identity 正是 identical 的對應名詞，除了「身份」，還可表示兩件事物的「一致，，同一性」。所以「利益一致」英文可寫作 an identity of interests。

于是乎，identical 這個形容詞的意思是 exactly the same, or very similar「一模一樣的；非常相似的」。表示「和某物相似」，常用搭配 be identical to/with sth。

The ingredients are identical with those of competing products.

和競品相比，它們的成分相同。

siphon off /?sa?f?n/

我們之前在外刊精讀訓練營中學過這個單詞。siphon 也寫作 syphon。作名詞時，siphon 指的是「虹吸管」。通過虹吸管，我們可以把水杯里的水在壓力的作用下吸 取出來，所以，siphon 作動詞時表示「私自挪用，抽調」錢款等，常用搭配為 siphon off。來看下面的《經濟學人》例句。
