好久沒寫這個專題了，今天我們來學習三組同義替換。我所挑出來的這些詞匯不僅可以用在閱讀、翻譯、寫作中，還會在聽力中出現，大家要引起重視哦。

嚴格來說，它們應該是「同近義替換」。因為很少會有一個單詞與另一個單詞完全相同的情況。

01

entrench 加劇

entrench = accelerate

Optimists hope that online work can set Africa on the path of services-led growth trodden by countries such as India and the Philippines. Pessimists worry such work will entrench injustices.

entrench 最初來源于法語詞匯 entrancher，意思為「挖壕溝」。挖掘戰壕和其他防御工事目的是免受敵人攻擊。于是它生出了一個比喻義：to establish sth very firmly so that it is very difficult to change「使根深蒂固，使處于牢固地位」，形容觀念、習慣、權力或制度等因為太牢固而難以改變。

雖然挖戰壕常給人積極的聯想，但這個比喻義卻常含貶義。網課「加劇」了教育的不平等，英文是 entrench educational inequality。對應的形容詞 entrenched 就是「根深蒂固的」。屬于外刊常用詞，下面《經濟學人》這句話就用到了它。

gauge 衡量

這個單詞容易讀錯，應該是 /ɡe?d?/。gauge 原本是指測量用的「儀器，儀表」。比如汽車都有的 petrol gauge「油表」，還有 temperature gauge「溫度計」。不過這種溫度計常見于工業設備、汽車等，家用的溫度計是 thermometer，既可以指體溫計，也可以指戶外溫度計。

不管是油表還是溫度計，都是為了測量數據而生。所以 gauge 作動詞表示 to judge how people feel about something or what they are likely to do「判斷，估計」別人的情感、態度或意圖。比如 gauge her mood「揣摩她的心情」。類似 judge，make a judgement about 或 measure。

They interviewed employees to gauge their reaction to the changes.

他們與雇員面談以判定他們的應變能力。

這個單詞在外刊中經常碰到，不過只有六級在很久之間出過兩次，考研英語尚未考過。好，我們來看《經濟學人》的這個例句。

But borrowings are not included in official government budgets, making it hard to gauge risk.

ingenuity 創造性

ingenuity = creativity

Facing up to that threat will require a whole other level of ingenuity.

同源的形容詞為 ingenious，常用來表示 very suitable for a particular purpose and resulting from clever new ideas，形容物體「精巧的」，或計劃、思想等「新穎獨特的；巧妙的」。來看 2020 年 12 月六級的閱讀真題。
