trail

熟詞生義 + 四級 + 考研詞匯

trail 除了表示「小路，小徑」之外，還可以作動詞表示 to be losing a game or other contest「落后」。可以和 in 構(gòu)成搭配，表示「在某方面發(fā)展落后」。文中 trailing in third place 是說那英落后于兩位外國選手，「位居第三」。

名詞 trailer 要開心很多，是大家的快樂甜甜圈——預告片！另外，它還有「拖車」的意思，多次在四六級聽力中出現(xiàn)。比如 2023 年 12 月的四級聽力。

它常和 in 搭配使用，構(gòu)成 keep sb in suspense「提心吊膽，吊人胃口」。在口語中，英美人士還常用 The suspense is killing me. 除了上面兩種譯法，我們還可以根據(jù)語境譯為「別賣關(guān)子了」。在《唐頓》第一季中，也有這句話。

詞根詞綴

注意咯，是 underwhelming 而不是 overwhelming，under- 除了表示「在......下面」之外，還有「不足，不能」的意思。所以 underwhelming 的含義為 not impressing or exciting you at all「平庸的；索然無味的」。《經(jīng)濟學人》在評價蘋果 Vision 發(fā)布會時用這個形容詞表達了不滿。

派生自動詞 resign。很多同學知道它表示「辭職」，但除此之外，resign 還可構(gòu)成短語 resign yourself to sth，意思是「屈從，勉強接受」。或者我們可譯為「將就」。
