Composed by Chance Watching Dragon BoatRaces Beyond the Lake
By Li Qunyu
Translated by Wang Yongli
Three thousand boatmen dash like lightning’s blaze,
Painted oars shoot forth beneath morningrays.
Drums roar on waves, scaled shapes stir allthe bays;
Thirty-six dragon crafts surge throughspray.
Long ago Ling Jun sank in Xiang River’s tide,
His ghost lingers still where clear watersglide.
Green grass, faint mist, dusk spreads farand wide;
Far flute wails grief for the river’s sad shade.

Five-Colored Silk Threads
By Chu Zhaoyang
Translated by Wang Yongli
Chu customs spread to Yue; men cut bamboo,wind silk strands,
They lay offerings beneath the water’s lands,
Then feast beneath the sun, with fine wovenbands.
Silk brocade outshines old verse’s lamb demands.
All praise the Dragon Feast—who tends Qu Yuan’s shrines?
We pour wine, pay homage, yet Miluo farreclines.
Note: old verse’s lamb refers to The Lambin The Book of Songs, which praises officials’ integrity via white lamb robes,contrasting neglected ancient virtues with fancy festive silk in the poem.

The Shrine of Qu Yuan
By Wang Zun
Translated by Wang Yongli
He would not bend to walk the drunkard’s shallow way,
Loyal and staunch, he sank in billowingbay.
By his shrine apes cry beneath the moon’s faint ray;
Still they seem to mourn the king’s unjust sway.

The Temple of Qu Yuan
By Cui Tu
Translated by Wang Yongli
Slander prevailed, misfortune none couldforesee,
His unjust grief stirs endless sympathy.
He sought to make Chu safe, not rage atKing Huai,
The old temple’sstele bears no script to see.
Fragrant orchid blooms on sunlit isle free;
Men laugh at his sober heart—who pours herb wine for thee?

Ode to Dragon Boat Races
By Liu Yuxi
Translated by Wang Yongli
In fifth month Yuan River floods the bank,
Villagers drift painted boats in ranks.
Ling Jun’s oldsongs long faded, yet mournful chants rise thanks
To oars struck hard, loud thunderousclanks.
Dragons stir their manes beneath soft rain’s brink —,
Rainbows stretch o’erstreams, their paired forms link.
Magistrate lifts green veil, awards victors’ ranks;
Winning crews cheer loud, losers hang paleflanks.
Success rests on prior toil, no fixed fatebanks;
Crowds line the shore, watch rites withwild, glad ranks.
Colorful flags glow o’er the water’s dark tanks,
Maids dance on waves, stage watery pranks.
Crowds disperse at dusk, grief lingers long;
Before Qu’s shrine,eastward the river rolls on.
