斗草是植根華夏大地的傳統民俗游戲,流傳千年,藏著獨屬于古代市井與深閨的鮮活意趣。盛唐詩歌繁榮,諸多詩人以筆墨記錄下斗草嬉游的生動畫面,將少女閑情、四時風物、民間樂事盡數寫進詩行。本文精選十四首唐代經典斗草詩作配上英譯,還原傳統民俗本貌,解讀唐詩里獨有的東方閑情雅趣。
值得指出的是,唐代斗草分為兩種玩法:
一是“武斗”(斗草莖):兩人各持一根草莖交叉拉扯,草莖先斷者落敗,類似草莖拔河,英文譯作 stem tug-of-war,多為孩童、鄉間百姓游玩;
二是“文斗”(對草名):眾人采摘各色花草,輪流報出花草名目,比拼花草數量與稀有程度,不靠拉扯,比拼見識,譯為 grass-stem contest,深受宮廷女子、仕女喜愛。
本次收錄詩作同時涵蓋兩種場景,兼顧民間與宮廷風貌。既有武斗也有文斗,民間百姓和兒童玩的斗草游戲,基本屬于武斗。而文人雅士、淑女名媛、上流社會流行的是文斗。詩作中兩類場景并存,以信達雅和功能對等、少歸化、無異化為翻譯準則:
